Important: Vanguard Chiropractic does not handle PI or auto-injury claims

If your whiplash is part of an active personal-injury or auto-injury claim, we are not the right clinic. Active PI cases need a clinic that specializes in PI documentation, attorney coordination, and lien-based billing. Several Tulsa clinics do that work well.

This page is for people with chronic, residual, or post-settlement whiplash symptoms who want cash-pay chiropractic care. $40 every visit, no insurance, no claim paperwork.

Whiplash describes a rapid acceleration-deceleration injury to the cervical spine, most commonly from a rear-end motor vehicle collision. According to the NIH National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the symptoms range from neck pain and stiffness to headache, dizziness, and reduced range of motion. Most cases resolve within a few weeks to months. The cases that walk into Vanguard Chiropractic are usually the chronic residuals: persistent neck stiffness, recurring headaches, or restricted rotation that did not resolve fully after the initial injury.

I am Dr. Jason Forward, DC. I run Vanguard Chiropractic in Brookside. This page covers chronic and post-settlement whiplash care, not active PI cases.

How chiropractic care addresses chronic whiplash residuals

Three steps. Find the restriction, restore motion, rebuild support. The order matters.

1

Find the restriction

Cervical range of motion testing, segmental palpation, dermatomes, motor strength, deep tendon reflexes, headache referral pattern check. Identify which segments are restricted, what soft tissues are guarding, and whether nerve symptoms are present.

2

Restore motion

Specific, controlled adjustment to restricted cervical segments. Soft tissue work on the suboccipitals, upper trapezius, sternocleidomastoid, and scalene muscles. The goal is to break the chronic guarding pattern that built up after the original injury.

3

Rebuild support

Five to ten minutes a day of specific work, deep neck flexor activation, scapular retraction, postural re-education. Whatever the exam revealed as deficient. The goal is durable, not heroic.

The four mechanical sources of chronic whiplash symptoms

Whiplash is the original injury. The chronic symptoms come from what was left behind. The exam answers which source is driving your residual symptoms.

Source 1

Cervical segmental restriction

Restricted facet joints from the original injury, never fully resolved. Often the upper cervical segments (C1-C2, C2-C3) and the cervicothoracic junction. The most common driver of chronic whiplash residuals.

Pattern: chronic neck stiffness, restricted rotation toward the affected side, end-range pain.

Source 2

Soft tissue residuals

Adhesions, restricted myofascial mobility, and chronic muscle guarding in the suboccipitals, upper trapezius, and scalenes. The body's protective response that never released.

Pattern: tight bands of muscle that reproduce the original symptoms when palpated.

Source 3

Cervicogenic headache pattern

Upper cervical segmental restriction refers pain into a one-sided headache pattern. A common but often-missed driver of chronic post-whiplash headaches.

Pattern: one-sided headache that starts at the base of the skull, often triggered by neck position.

Source 4

Postural compensations

Chronic forward head posture, scapular dysfunction, and altered movement patterns that built up while the patient was guarding the injured area. These outlast the original injury and create their own load problems.

Pattern: forward head, rounded shoulders, asymmetric scapular positioning, recurring tension headaches.

What your first whiplash visit looks like, step by step

Most patients overestimate how long this takes. Here is the actual sequence, in order, the first time you walk in.

0 min

Walk in, sign in

Two pages of intake. What hurts, when the original injury happened, what makes it worse, what you have already tried, any red-flag history. No insurance card, no claim paperwork, no driver's license required.

3 min

Brief intake conversation

I read your form, then ask you to tell me the story in your own words: when the injury happened, what was treated then, what is left over now.

6 min

Focused cervical exam

Range of motion, segmental palpation, dermatomes, motor strength, deep tendon reflexes, soft tissue assessment, headache referral pattern check. If your exam reveals findings that need imaging or a medical referral, I will say so.

10 min

The adjustment

Specific, focused, board-safe. Cervical work calibrated to what the exam supports. Soft tissue work on the muscles that came up tight on palpation. Most patients feel some immediate change, although that varies.

15 min

Pay $40, walk out

Cash, card, HSA, or FSA at the front desk. Same total every visit. I will tell you whether to come back tomorrow, next week, or only if it flares again. No pressure to schedule.

What a whiplash treatment plan actually looks like

Most chronic whiplash residuals respond to conservative care across six to twelve weeks. The arc below is the typical pattern. Yours may move faster or slower depending on how long the symptoms have been building.

The Road to Progress

How far do you want to take your health? The choice is yours.

Three phases of chiropractic care: Relief, Corrective, Wellness RECOVERY IMPROVEMENT OPTIMIZATION RELAPSE RELAPSE Symptoms return, back to visit 1 Symptoms return, back to visit 1 1 2 3 Decision to begin care Decision to continue care Decision to continue care DAYS WEEKS MONTHS YEARS 1. RELIEF CARE 2. CORRECTIVE CARE 3. WELLNESS CARE
Day 1 · The Bandaid

The bandaid decision

Today is the bandaid. Walk in, exam, first adjustment, walk out. If a bandaid is all you want, that is what you get, no argument. Not my favorite outcome, but it is your call. Same $40, no pressure to come back.

Relief Care · Weeks 1-3

True recovery

True recovery needs frequency: 2-3 visits per week for 2-3 weeks. The tissue calms, the segment regains motion, the nerve quiets. Many people stop here when they feel good. The issue often comes back.

Corrective Care · Weeks 4-8+

Improvement

1-2 visits per week, weeks 4 through 8 or so. The chronic guarding pattern releases, supporting mechanics rebuild, the segment holds its motion between visits. Some people stop here. The issue often comes back.

Wellness Care · Months-Years

Optimization

The rare patient. Ongoing scheduled care regardless of how you are feeling, so the flare-and-recover cycle never starts. Months to years of prioritized, dedicated chiropractic. This is the real gold and the preferred course. Same $40 every visit, no contracts, stop any time.

Vanguard Chiropractic vs. typical chronic-whiplash care in Tulsa

Most chiropractic offices in Tulsa do not publish their pricing. Vanguard pricing is the standing rate, every visit, no exceptions. Note: clinics that handle PI cases typically bill through the claim, not the patient, which is why active PI patients are better served there.

When chronic whiplash is not a chiropractic case

Most chronic whiplash residuals respond well to conservative care. Some cases need medical evaluation first.

Walk into an emergency room, not Vanguard Chiropractic, for any of these:

  • Severe headache after a recent head or neck injury, especially with vomiting or confusion
  • Sudden severe weakness or numbness in an arm or leg
  • Loss of consciousness related to a recent neck injury
  • Severe vertigo or visual disturbance after a recent injury
  • Severe night pain with unexplained weight loss or fever
  • Any symptoms following a high-energy mechanism such as a high-speed collision

These can signal a fracture, a vascular injury, a concussion, or another serious problem. They need imaging and medical evaluation immediately.

Frequently asked questions

I was in a car accident. Can you treat my whiplash?
If your whiplash is part of an active personal-injury or auto-injury claim, no. Vanguard Chiropractic does not handle PI documentation, attorney coordination, or lien-based billing, and you will be better served by a clinic that does. If your case has been settled, you are not pursuing a claim, or you are dealing with chronic residuals from an old injury, we can see you on a cash-pay basis. $40 flat, every visit.
How long does chronic whiplash take to resolve?
Most chronic whiplash residuals respond to conservative care within six to twelve weeks. The longer the chronic guarding has been in place, the longer the rehabilitation arc tends to be. Cases that have been chronic for years still respond, but they take longer than cases of just a few months.
How many visits will I need?
Visit 1 is what I call the bandaid. Walk in, get an exam, get the first adjustment. If that is all you want, that is what you get, and I will hand it to you without an argument. Beyond that, there are three honest phases. Relief care is 2-3 visits per week for 2-3 weeks until the acute presentation calms. Corrective care drops to 1-2 visits per week for the next 4 to 8 weeks while supporting mechanics rebuild. Wellness care is ongoing scheduled care for months to years, regardless of how you are feeling, to prevent the chronic guarding pattern from re-establishing. Most people stop at relief or corrective; the issue often comes back when they do. The real gold of chiropractic is wellness, and that is the patient I most want to see. Same $40 every visit. No contracts, no packages, no membership fees, and you can stop any time, but I will tell you straight up what I recommend.
Do you take insurance for whiplash visits?
No. Vanguard Chiropractic is cash-pay only. Every visit is $40 flat, paid at the desk. We do not bill insurance and we do not work with personal-injury attorneys or auto-injury claims.
Will my insurance reimburse me for cash-pay whiplash visits?
Possibly, depending on your plan. Some health plans reimburse a portion of out-of-network chiropractic visits if you submit a superbill. We can provide a receipt with the visit date and amount; what your plan does with it is between you and them. We do not handle the submission or appeals.
Do I need an MRI for chronic whiplash?
Usually no. For chronic mechanical residuals without red-flag findings, the exam tells us what we need to know to start. If your history or exam suggests a structural problem that would change the treatment plan, I will refer you for imaging then.
What if my symptoms are mostly headaches, not neck pain?
Cervicogenic headaches, the kind that originate from the upper cervical spine, are one of the most common chronic whiplash residuals. The treatment is the same: identify the restricted segments, address the soft tissue contributors, rebuild postural support. See the headaches and migraines page for more.
What does a $40 whiplash visit actually include?
Intake, focused cervical exam, the adjustment plus targeted soft tissue work if appropriate, and a brief home-work conversation. Same flat $40, every visit, every patient. No upsells, no packages, no sticker shock at the desk.
